Why Some People Are Concerned About GPS Viruses
With many car owners in the United Kingdom using GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation to guide them through unfamiliar roads, many are concerned about the possibility that their units could be invaded by online viruses, since they use the Internet for the updates.
Although there is only one noted case of a GPS tool that has a virus in it, it was a technical fault at the factory when the program for the gadgets was downloaded from the main computer. But, still, the danger is very real.
What could happen if the GPS unit of a car gets a virus is not a pretty picture. Not merely will many people get lost, some of them may even meet accidents. A GPS system may tell the car owner that he is heading to a freeway, so he may increase his speed only to find out that he is actually driving towards a line of cars in a congested highway.
Fortunately, when the aforementioned incident happened where a GPS manufacturing company released a model that had a virus, every manufacturer understood the risk and immediately acted to prevent that mistake from happening in their factory. As of now, there is no reported case of accidents caused by a GPS navigation unit that has been infected by a virus.
